About the wellbeing mapping tool

The wellbeing mapping tool was built from the ground up by researchers at Dalhousie University in partnership with team members at Engage Nova Scotia.

Results of the NS Quality of Life Survey make up the dataset available through the tool. You can explore survey results for geographic areas across the province.

Like any tool, it can be used with other resources and analysis so you can build what’s useful to you.

What the Tool Makes Possible

Each way we can visualize data is a possibility for better understanding and interpretation.

The wellbeing mapping tool allows you to map and graph NS Quality of Life Survey results. Tables and text are one way to digest information, but they aren’t the whole pie.

Visualizing data offers us opportunities to see the same information in a new way, often leading to new insights. Use the tool to answer questions you’re curious about and see data the way you want.

Survey and Dataset

The 2019 NS Quality of Life Survey asked 230 questions about quality of life and wellbeing.

Almost 13,000 people responded, leading to more than 300,000 data points - each one reflecting the stories and experiences of people in Nova Scotia.

The results, just as in the survey, are organized by the eight domains of wellbeing - a framework developed by the Canadian Index of Wellbeing. Their Community Wellbeing Survey is what the NS Quality of Life Survey is based on.
